This unique to the world program in glass and ceramics brings together specialists across multiple disciplines to offer a window into the world of glass and ceramics in a truly comprehensive fashion.  Moving freely between Art and Science, our master treats these transformative materials as not only artistic media through which students develop practical making skills, but also as engines for developing a deeper understanding of the scientifically supported body of knowledge stemming from research in chemistry, conservation and restoration, materials science, history, and more.  The program welcomes students from around the world with diverse backgrounds including, Art, Design, Architecture, Science and Engineering, and others.

Housed within the VICARTE Research unit dedicated to Glass and Ceramics for the Arts, and offering practical classes on both the Campus of Science and Technology of the Nova University (FCT-NOVA) and the Fine Arts Campus of University of Lisbon (FBAUL), we work to ensure a rich experience of international renown.

Mission

In a world of rapidly changing technologies, internationalization, and market forces, we oftentimes lose track of the value of human creativity.  Developing cultured minds and skilled hands have been a hallmark of the truly great civilisations throughout history, and glass and ceramics have been materials through which we have witnessed the ongoing struggles and successes of the human endeavour.  Whether we look to lenes and medical apparatuses, a simple tea cup, or a porcelain dragon sculpted for an emperor, glass and ceramics have played central roles in the development of human culture and technology.  We work to guide our students to their highest creative potentials through hands on practice in glass and ceramics making.  Moreover, we strive to assist in the development of our students’ awareness of themselves as participants in the ever-developing social fabric of which they are apart.  Individual creativity and maker’s practice is balanced against scientific knowledge and a sense of place within history.

For whom?

We seek those with a penchant for personal growth deriving from a balanced and introspective experience with materials, intellect, and emotion. The program welcomes students from around the world with diverse backgrounds including, Art, Design, Architecture, Science and Engineering, and others. We are looking for you.

Future

Graduates of our program leave with a set of skills and experience in glass and ceramics that can enable careers as professional artists, designers, and crafts persons, as well as pathways toward higher educational pursuits and teaching.  Moreover, the demanding nature of the course of study leaves students capable of developing other entrepreneurial endeavours within the creative sector and beyond.
