Mission
VICARTE is a well-established research unit, investigating tradition and innovation in ceramics and glass. We develop innovative research exploring the dialogues between Art and Science, combining scientific knowledge, traditional artistic and craft techniques and know-how with technologies. By focusing on “Art, Science and Materiality” and “Cultural Heritage Studies”, VICARTE will explore synergies and interaction between different disciplinary approaches, maximising their combined impact.
We are a NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT) and Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon (FBAUL) partnership. Integrating members from these two institutions and the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Oporto, the School of Arts and Design, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, and University Beira Interior, VICARTE connects art, craft, design, sciences, history, archaeology and conservation. Our collaborations join an international multidisciplinary community of researchers to amplify skills and generate cutting-edge investigation with global impact. This innovative framework has earned us worldwide recognition from artists and scientists.
In 2009 the Master in Glass Art and Science was founded by this RU as one of the newest and most innovative concepts in glass education, evolving into the new Master in Glass and Ceramic Art and Science. VICARTE is responsible for the supervision of Master and PhD theses in Conservation and Chemistry involving glass and ceramic at FCT-NOVA, and in Art and Design at FBAUL and FBAUP. VICARTE is a member of the PhD Course in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage – CORES, sponsored by FCT-MCTES.
VICARTE is designed to weave together diverse strands of expertise in glass and ceramic, to create a web of knowledge by connecting creative minds across disciplines, encouraging experimentation, risk taking and highly imaginative problem solving.
