Mario Bandiera PhD project aims to investigate the manufacture of Roman opaque red glass during the 2nd century AD. A set of 40 samples has been studied by means of a multi-analytical approach, which involved international collaboration (Musée du Louvre, IRAMAT Orleans, LAMA Venice). The chemical composition, the crystalline phases were explored in depth to identify the colouring agents, the probable raw material, and to detect some clue to locate the production centres. Furthermore, systematic laboratory reproduction helped the understanding of the technical aspects such as melting condition, preparation and selection of raw materials and how they could be added to obtain opaque red glass.
