Making History by (re)Making

Reconstruction of art and craft processes and materials using manuals, recipe collections and technical treatises on ceramics, glass, and porcelain.

Within the international network Active Matter, there is a focus on the role of fire as the agent in human-material interaction, investigating how craftsmen achieved the temperatures required in ceramic-making, enamelling, and glazing. In collaboration with LiDA (IPLeiria), VICARTE is constructing a vertical camera obscura based on Kepler’s description, alongside other visual recording devices that contributed to the history of image formation and capturing.

Using a notation system developed by NOVA LINCS for the systematic documentation of gestures, VICARTE aims to identify, preserve, and transmit the heritage of tacit skills in artistic and artisanal processes.
